AN OPEN LETTER TO THE PEOPLE OF CHRISTCHURCH

It’s ‘business as usual’ at Admatha Dementia Care

It has been an extraordinary year for all of us in Christchurch, especially here on the East side of town.

We’ve been tried and tested by Mother Nature, first with the earthquakes and then with the snow. Now at last things seem to be settling down a little, and we’re looking forward with more certainty to the year ahead.

2012 will be a year of rebuilding: not only our earthquake-damaged houses and streets, but the shaken confidence in our city and its future.

We’ve been lucky here at Admatha Dementia Care. While many rest homes have closed their doors, we have been able to continue doing what we do best: provide care with love in a warm, safe and homely environment.

Like most homes on the east side of town, Admatha has acquired a little extra ‘character’ over the past year or so. But we’re snug and watertight, and an independent structural engineer has confirmed that our buildings are suitable for continued operation.

If you’re an ‘east-sider’ needing residential care for a friend of family member with dementia, close to home is the best place to start looking. We warmly invite you to give us a call, make a time and pop in and say hello. We’d love to show you round and tell you more about the very special care we provide.

Care with love, 24/7. It’s that simple.

We would love to meet with you.

With warmest wishes

Donya Nee
Vision Development Co-ordinator

VISITING TIPS

We invite you to read  our article about 'Visiting a person with dementia over the Christmas period' as published on the Alzheimers New Zealand site.

We hope that this article will be helpful for you and your families.

RESPITE CARE

We wish to remind people that we are still running a dedicated respite care room at both Admatha and Avonlea Dementia Rest Home care facilities. This means families/carers can book respite care in advance.

Carers can prepare for time out in advance, knowing that their loved one has a booked room in a well-established home that specializes in the care of people who have dementia.

It is very important that carers have time to relax and take care of themselves. Taking a break can help with this.

We believe that most people want to stay at home as long as possible. We work hard to make sure people who come for respite care go home as good as or better than when they came into our care.

At Admatha we create a loving and homely atmosphere where each person is supported to experience each moment richly. This is our vision. We achieve this vision through our values: By honouring the uniqueness of each person, the immense value of each person, openness, honesty and integrity.

Please feel free to contact our Vision Development Coordinator, Donya Nee, on 027 277 6882 any time to enquire about our homes and about our respite care service. She would love to meet with you and assist you.

HELPING WITH YOUR MOVE

We understand how hard time have been for many following the earthquakes.

We are now offering a new service, free of charge of course! In order to help the process of moving into care easier for you, we will:

* Assist with transport to view Admatha if you are finding this difficult at present

* Help you move any furniture

* Help you to label clothing and personal possessions.

LEE ANDREWS, OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST, JOINS OUR STAFF

Lee Andrews has recently joined our staff as the Senior Occupational Therapist for the organisation, and as such will be working within, and regularly visiting, all our facilities.

Lee's main role is the provision of an occupational therapy service that enhances the quality of life of our residents. Much of this will be achieved through the ongoing development of, and leadership to, our Diversional Therapy Teams. Because Occupational Therapists specialise in occupational needs for people across the age-spectrum, it is Lee's responsibility to ensure that a balanced, meaningful and respectful programme of activities is offered to all our residents – be it within a group scenario or on an individual basis.

Lee comes to this position with a background in, and passion for, dementia, and will bring inspiration and guidance to all staff working with our residents, in order to enrich their lives.

ABOUT ADMATHA DEMENTIA CARE

Admatha Home and Admatha Lodge are self-contained homes situated a short distance apart in the peaceful suburb of Richmond, Christchurch.

Though we are on the East side of town, we have been fortunate to be able to provide uninterrupted care throughout this turbulent year for the people whose home is Admatha.

We move into 2012 strengthened by the challenges of the past year, proud and privileged to care for our existing Admatha family, and welcoming each new resident into our care.

Admatha Home provides secure rest home level dementia care and respite care, while Admatha Lodge specialises in hospital level dementia care.

A registered nurse in on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The two facilities offer continuity of care should this become appropriate during the course of the dementia journey.
