Age Concern’s International Older Person’s Day Expo

Monday 10th October 2011

Admatha and Avonlea Dementia Care were proud to be a part of the Age Concern International Older Person’s Health Expo as exhibitors.

A major theme of the Expo was ‘Health and Safety’.

Our focus as an exhibitor was to promote the importance of respite care by being available to talk about aspects of respite care as well as having plenty of information and literature available for customers.

A secondary focus, but that which proved more popular, was our material regarding ‘visiting a person with dementia’. Many people were very interested in this topic and took plenty of copies of supplied material.

This was a wonderful opportunity to promote our passion for education in dementia as well as to promote the great importance of respite care. It was a great way to let the community know that this service is available.

There was an overall feeling of positivity and socialisation at the expo and wonderful to see so many of our senior citizens out and about together enjoying the day, particularly after the recent earthquakes.

Our stall was manned by Kirsty Hart, Sue Denton and myself (Donya Nee).

The event was very busy and apparently much busier than previous years. This is the first year that care providers have been considered for this Expo.

There was a wide array of exhibitors from Eldernet and Alzheimers Canterbury through to Chiropractors and the West Pac bank.

Overall the expo was a very positive community event. I feel that we indeed helped some people regarding knowledge and awareness around our respite service and visiting tips and techniques.

The Christchurch Earthquake - Moving Forward Together

It is a strange and uncertain time for those of us who live and work in Christchurch. In the aftermath of the earthquake, we are all being challenged in so many different ways.

I hope that the people of Christchurch will find a way to grow as people through our earthquake experiences.  I believe that our teams at Admatha and Avonlea will grow closer and that we will be able to move forward together.

It is important to include the communities at our other facilities in this process. We are part of one team, caring about one another and sharing the same vison and values. If we in Christchurch are growing as a result of the hardships and challenges we are facing, we have a responsibility to reach out beyond our own small world, and share our learnings with others.

To support and help each other along the way, members of our team are sharing their thoughts with each other in our communication book.  We have decided to include these reflections in our website, so that you too can share in this.   Every few days you will find some reflections to help us in “Moving Forward Together.”

Let’s work together to inspire and motivate each other to move forward with confidence.

Update - Tuesday 29th March 2011

We have had some wonderful feedback on some of the thoughts we have shared on this part of the site. People previously unknown to us have been moved to share their own insights and experiences with us, and we have decided that it is appropriate to include some of these here, even though they may not come from someone who is part of our organisation.

If you have any thoughts you would like to share, you are welcome to send them to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , and we will consider including them on the site.
